Magill, James

James Magill

Donegall Place

  1. Have you managed to date any of the James Magill photos? I have a dozen photos from the same studio with five different versions of their logo/seal, including the two you have. I'm trying to start by dating the pictures before I can work out who is in them

    1. Hey Darian,
I'm afraid I can't help you with what you're looking for but I'm wondering if you could help me. I'm just embarking on a study of the history of photography in Ireland and McGill's name seems to be included amongst the pioneers of the art on the island. Do you know where I could find some more information on the man and/or his contemporaries?
      Cheers, Peter.

  2. A short local obit states that James Magill 'served his apprenticeship with the late Mr. John Hudson, High Street, subsequently starting for himself in 1847 in Castle Place, removing after two years to the Donegall Place establishment with which his name was so long associated'.
